I'll give you a few across a couple posts.

The game starts in 1337-the "late middle ages." Some key events and nations;

>The 100 Years War (England/France)
Ever since the Normans (from Normandy) invaded England and seized the throne, an akward situation arose in which English nobles held land in France and vice versa. As a result, conflict arose between the two crowns-when Edward III of England attempted to seize the throne of France for himself, it lead to a century long conflict between France and England for control of the two kingdoms.

>Vijayanagara Empire
In EU4, France is Europe's "big blue blob." In India, Vijayanagara is the big yellow blob; it was an enormous Hindu Empire which ruled most of southern India, and lasted until the 1650s. Following the defeat of Muslim conquerers in Northern India and the collapse of Muslim rule in the south.

>Byzantine Empire
The "Byzantine Empire", aka the remanants of the Eastern Roman Empire, is in dire straits. Having lost most of its territories to either Balkan powers or the ever-expanding Ottoman Turks from the east, it is quite firmly in decline. In EU4, you start in 1444-shortly before the Ottomans took Constantinople and the last vestige of the "Roman Empire" fell forever. This time, you're 100 years earlier-and can maybe reverse their fortunes.

>Florence
Florence is one of many Italian Republics; it is notable in particular for the famous "Medici" family, a prominent family of bankers who came to wield tremendous poltiical influence. While EU5 starts a little before they truly came to prominence (Medici Bank wasn't until 1397) you can guide them to greatness; EU4 starts in the final years of Cosimo de' Medici as ruler of Florence-probably the most famous of them.
