but then after it started getting steam they went full backpeddling mode and suddenly they were able to make the singleplayer of these games functional without an internet connection afterwards

read: they wanted to break the product you bought without giving you a full refund so you would be more likely to buy the sequel/replacement game without having to compete with their old product people already own and paid money for.
