It was mainly the apathy of the actual white roman populace. The problem is that Rome where ever they conquered they also made that population part of their empire. Now you have an overexpanded empire that is multi-racial and multicultural so there was nothing that made it inheritly Roman anymore. Of course the white Roman citizens saw this and stopped giving a shit not caring if Rome fell or not because it wasn't their homeland anymore nor did it reflect their interests. Sounds kind of like what is going on today throughout Western civilization.
