Record rainfall floods Moscow, stranding vehicles and collapsing bridge

Record-breaking downpours inundated Moscow on Monday, turning streets into rivers, submerging vehicles, and leading to the collapse of a bridge in the surrounding region, officials and media reports said.
Russia's meteorological service reported that the deluge broke a 144-year-old record for daily rainfall, with some areas receiving nearly a full month's worth of precipitation in just a few hours. In Zelenograd, 91 mm of rain was recorded, surpassing the monthly norm of 85 mm.
Videos posted on social media showed cars almost entirely underwater, a delivery driver wading through waist-deep floods with his e-bike, and an ambulance stranded in high water under a bridge. Major thoroughfares including the Volokolamskoye Highway and Shelepikhinskaya Embankment were closed due to the flooding. Moscow's transport department urged residents to abandon private cars and use public transportation, as the city's storm drains were overwhelmed. The extreme weather also caused significant disruption at the city's airports, with around 130 flights delayed or canceled.
In the Naro-Fominsk district of the Moscow region, a concrete bridge collapsed, cutting off the village of Aleksino and two dacha communities from road access.
The massive flooding has prompted calls for action, with some State Duma deputies appealing to the prime minister to introduce compensation for car owners whose vehicles were damaged, blaming the city's inadequate drainage infrastructure. Forecasters predict the rain and strong winds will continue throughout the day.
