yes it can be a bit hard to approach such skittish creatures without scaring them off. my usual principle is that it's better to get at least one fairly clear photo than nothing, if for no other reason than to be able to post it on inaturalist, then if it stays put and i manage to lean in a little bit closer i'll be able to get nicer shots
flies are the hardest to get pictures of, they're always darting off at the first sign of movement. dragonflies & damselflies aren't much easier unless they approach you instead of vice versa. arachnids are a bit easier for obvious reasons but my camera really doesn't like focusing on spiders in their webs
really i think i just need a proper macro lens. maybe then i'll be able to take good pictures of springtails and mites too
