In a game like Castlevania, it's pretty hard, but there are little to none bullshit deaths.
In Sonic Heroes, the game is only moderately difficult, but has plenty of sections where the controls are literally ripped away from you and you go flying to your death. The game makes up for it by giving you a bunch of lives but the overall experience is lesser over all because of a feeling of controllessness (< I made this word the fuck up). Overall I agree with you.
