Yes, they literally are. The warp and all the entities in it are physical reflections of the minds of people in the materium. The more people know about Chaos, the more powerful and present Chaos becomes. It's why heresy has to be violently stamped out wherever it crops up, at whatever cost. People just being aware of Chaos and the daemonic forces in it means those very same force have a foothold in the materium and will keep spreading like a fucking plague.
