You should make a checklist of things you want to do and see first, and then plan your trip around that. Then if you ever feel like being aimless you can do that instead, but at least you got plans if you want to do something.
And definitely should learn at least some Japanese, at the very least basics enough to get by in a foreign country (ex. thank you, please, yes, no, excuse me, this, that, etc.). You may not need to be super proficient, but just enough to show you are trying is great and I think would enhance the trip greatly.
