Huh, that is sad. I went like two months before COVID shut everything down and I got along just fine with the basics. Some people spoke English when I tried to talk to them, but this was in Shinjuku. I think I made it clear I could only speak little bits of Japanese, so that may have helped. There are lots of spanish speaking and foreign people where I live, so I tried to imitate how they talk when they try to show they can't speak much English- lots of hand gestures, using short sentences, etc.
Honestly my biggest challenge was learning the train system. We have a small train where I live, so my experience has been limited. I misunderstood how large the train system so I got lost and didn't know which stops to use when first arriving. Thankfully a nice officer helped point us where to go and I got used to it after another day or two.

I was attending conference in Japan last year and had to stay at Tokyo for first and last night's so I paid a visit to Akiba since everyone was talking about it so much on 4chan. And honestly, it was glorified shopping street - tons of shops (some had good prices for plastic models however so it was not entirely wasted time), tons of maid cafes (which I was afraid to visit - I could break tons of unwritten rules without even realising it and/or they would probably drain my wallet rapidly) and couldn't even take photos because every square meter was occupied with advertising girls with "no photo" sign (and those who had none probably wouldn't like that either).

It's a shitty place for tourists, 99% of stores there you can buy cheaper online but there for the sake of dumb tourists, most stores are clone of Animate (which exists all over Japan), and in terms of arcades the place is nothing special.
Eroge stores are worth going though, being able to physically browse them is pretty cool, and those places are actually hard to find outside of Akihabara, unlike Animate clone stores, and Gigo/Taito that's in every station of Tokyo.
