It has nothing to do with Putin. He is just doing what Russians want. Russia lost a lot of prestige in the 90s when they collapsed and it hurt their ego badly. Conquering Ukraine would have healed some of that pain. But it failed, because Russians are legendarily incompetent as always. If Putin croaks, the next guy will be exactly the same. Russians WANT this war. They fucking love it. They're not the first country starting to believe their own lies.
