Personally, story-wise, I thought Phoenix was coolest in FFV because it was a transformed Wind Drake, and the Wind Drakes were such a fucking awesome, huge part of the story in many direct and indirect ways.

But it is weird that the wind drake had to transform into a Phoenix to be used as a summon when Syldra just got to be a summon as-is. Especially considering this was Phoenix's first appearance as a summon, so it's not like they needed to shoehorn anything specific. Is the act of a dragon transforming into a phoenix something from eastern mythology that I'm not aware of?
