FFXVI should have been even MORE like Naruto if it wanted to be great. I wanted Clive to have a conversation with Ifrit at least once or for there to actually be any kind of character dynamic between Clive and the fire demon inside him

Kurama is iconic and mysterious from the very beginning until the very end, and he's got an undeniable presence on the story events in at least 9 different ways that build and build as the story develops complexity and reveals more and more.

Ifrit by comparison is no more fleshed out than Ifrit or any other summon has been before when they were just summon animations. It just sucks. Ifrit is one of my favorites from the beginning and he receives nothing for his legacy from XVI. The cutscene QTE feats and half baked boss fight mechanics are still cool though.

In Final Fantasy V, one of the boss in the game is called the Soul Cannon. The boss is accompanied by two allies called Launchers. The Launchers are separate enemies gameplay-wise, but visually, they're just part of the Soul Cannon sprite (they're the two small black holes, the one on the side facing the camera and the one at the top pointing upward).
Something interesting about this boss and its two allies is that the Soul Cannon has 22,500 HP and the Launchers have 10,800 HP; however, they die automatically once their HP reaches below 10,000, so the Soul Cannon effectively has 12,501 HP and the Launchers effectively have 801 HP.
Why make their HP work like this? It's because when enemies die in Final Fantasy V, they get this effect where they turn purple and disappear. But for this boss, they wanted it to have an explosion effect instead, and instead of giving them an unique death script (which might be complicated to code since FFV usually doesn't have unique code for each monsters' death) they made it trigger once their HP reaches a certain threshold (much easier to code since a lot of monsters have different behavior based on HP remaining). The reason they chose to set it at under 10,000 is because the maximum damage is 9,999, so you'll never be able (in theory) to "bypass" that HP threshold and kill them by reaching 0 HP.
However, the Launchers are also level 50, so they are susceptible to the Blue Magic spell Level 5 Death, which instantly kills anyone with a level divisible by 5. Doing so will instantly kill the Launchers and will not play their explosion animation. Interestingly, it will not play the purple animation either, since they do not have sprites of their own (they are just part of the Soul Cannon sprite).

Being in the XIII fandom, part of the problem, which leads to images like the one you posted, is that a lot of XIII fans refuse to play the sequels or read the books. I'm not that guy, and I don't care whether or not you think Golden Sun is better than FF, but what you are saying demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the Djinn system. You're not really supposed to reequip them, you're supposed to use them for a Summon. It's a trade off. You can mix and match Djinn to create potentially more powerful classes with stronger Psynergies, but the trade off is that if you want to use a Djinn you might sacrifice some of your abilities for a few turns or you might need to dedicate a character to using and Summoning Djinni. Or you put them in classes where using 1 of the Djinn doesn't change anything. It's also pretty much a non-issue if you leave the characters in their default classes, which gives you an incentive for doing that as well.

On my first playthrough, this is the moment the game "clicked". As an oldfag, I think everything else was just too narrative-driven, and it never felt like there was a good time to just explore and fuck around, especially with the various transportation restrictions you're stuck with up until that point.

I get why they didn't want to give you a full-on airship until late game, but it feels wrong that your first big moment for exploration and backtracking is putting around shallow water dead-ends in a busted-ass seaplane, then your next chance is basically the endgame.

It was just clashing with what I expected a JRPG to be, especially one so highly acclaimed—I really wanted something that felt like the kick-off to a grand adventure, and instead I got an extremely linear, claustrophobic-feeling slog that didn't seem to explore anything beyond an extremely generic "big corporation bad!" concept.

But then I got older and I learned how to ignore my own preconceptions and expectations and just enjoy things on their own terms, and I really love Midgar now. It's all about atmosphere and just getting a chance to know these characters where they are in life at the moment. It's still extremely linear, but you do get a bunch of chances to explore, and there's definitely some cool stuff to find.

The Devil's in the details. It honestly depends how each and every one of those things is implemented. Even the gacha mechanics could be fun if they don't work off of actual money and only earn you things that don't matter, like random Tetramaster cards or some other kind of collectible.

Real time combat will always make me sad, though. I just don't like it. My hope for the FFIX remake (if it was ever real in the first place) was that it would use some new evolution of the ATB system that was still completely turn based, and that engine could easily be used as a base to remake any game from 1-6 that they wanted to slap it on.

The FFX postgame is definitely symptomatic of an era in JRPGs where players demanded increasingly longer playtimes, but devs weren't sure exactly what players wanted to spend 100+ hours doing.

Given that most FFs up until the PS1 era capped off at about 50 hours or less, even for a "completionist" run, I think the devs just felt that anyone who wanted to still be playing the same game after 100 hours deserved to be punished.
