>to a typical person it's fucked,
true but from experience I can say that because even normies have "precious" data on their computers, just throwing it away entirely is usually not desired. They'll often at least take it to a repair place (or ask a techie they know) to see if anything can be done to recover their family photos, homegrown porn, schoolwork, etc.

It's less of a problem on phones since normies tend to upload all their photos to Le Cloud (if not using insta/facebook/whatever to take the photos directly) and nothing productive happens on a phone that isn't stored somewhere else (like e-mail). Contact lists are often stored on the SIM, too, so popping it out (or having the wagie at the phone place do so) keeps that stuff. So they're willing to toss phones over nothing.

But computers, I'd rate as similar to a car in that normies don't have a clue about the issue when something is wrong, but are willing to shell out to have repairs done.

>they have a "windows computer', they /mean it/,
Yeah, I remember the days of people thinking "PC" means "Windows box" and saying stuff like "No, I don't have a PC, I have a Mac..."

headphone jack repair is the fucking worst. I've never managed to do it without melting the housing. I have to do that old trick of crushed up graphite in glue to re-seat them shits. Repairing a male jack is just out of the question, I simply splice new ones on with a long lead.

Laptops are an outlier because they're too tightly built and so many things are proprietary that the chance of meaningful repair is slim. Just to replace a CPU you need a fucking wave station or fancy overpriced paste and a temp controlled heat gun and a lot of luck.
