>>105753952have you been on digikey, mcmaster, amphenol, etc.? the shipping on components is outrageous. that's even before getting tools worth a shit. these days to repair anything that itself costs less than around 150bux is not worth repairing. it's just fun, or an excuse to do modifications at the same time.
I swapped the battery on my ancient phone, but that's it.
>>105753760 (OP)sometimes, although anything modern this really just comes down to soldering in a new Li battery. Modern electronics in their integrated circuit format don't really lend themselves to being repaired, the cost of equipment and time needed to repair just lends things to being thrown away (and bought again, of course :))

>>105753952My TV's backlight went out. The TV itself was free, but given its age and original MSRP, it should be worth about 200 bucks if it were in mint condition but still old.
Looking up replacement backlight strips, OEM ones are like 300$. If I were to just bodge it with some garbage chinesium LED strip, getting a reel of it from an electrical supply store gets me results for around 75$ for 10ft of the stuff, before shipping. I guess I could use a crappy dollar store 3ft strip (around 5bux) but then I need extra stuff to make it always-on and the color will probably be not quite actually white because bottom dollar RGB slop.
And that's assuming it's just the lights, and not the voltage driver or whatever where I'll have to buy handfuls of caps for 80bux each after shipping.
And if I didn't have any tools to start with, I'd want at minimum a decent multimeter, a soldering station, and supplies. So throw on another 50bux for decent quality gear and some consumables.
I could easily go to a pawn shop and just pay 75-150$ for an entire new TV of similar quality instead of all of the above plus the man-hours in diagnosing and repairing the backlight.

I tried to start a home business freelancing device repair for people, hoping to eventually get to doing it for mom n pop businesses. pretty much everyone said the same thing:
>Why give it to you to repair when I can just go to Best Buy and get a new one?it's even worse for trying to do it for businesses because they have warranties and contracts and shit so even if they wanted, having me touch their POS or menu display TVs or whatever means violating some warranty or service contract
>>105754082the pro move is to get junked equipment and salvage it. wifi cards don't usually break and they're all the same little Qualcomm module. series of laptop also generally use the same keyboards and trackpads; for example I have a junked Acer Nitro 5 that needs a keyboard replacement (among other things) but randomly found some Acer business class thing in the trash and the chassis, keyboard, trackpad, and cooling solution are all almost the same as in the Nitro series, just without edgy red trim and gaymer lighting.

>>105754187true but this is /g/ and so the >IMPLICATION is that we're talking about consoomer electronics. most consumer electronics that are repairable in any meaningful way and aren't some System-On-Chip affront towards the Lord are cheap as fuck and the cost of repairs quickly outpaces just replacing the fucking thing.
I have actually repaired quite a few electronic things in my life. Identifying and replacing blown capacitors is really easy to do in most electronic devices. I once saved a home theater amp by replacing two caps for less than $3.
Hell, you don't even have to solder to repair many things. Just taking them apart and cleaning them works wonders.
>>105754203perhaps we should be more specific, repairing it yourself vs. having a professional repair it
because yea, professional repairs have much higher costs. if i replace a rubber seal on my leaking toilet it'll cost me the price of the seal and a bit of time to look up what to get and how to install it. if i got a plumber to do it, it might cost half what it costs to install a new toilet
Consumers are going to want to get their stuff repaired instead of throwing shit away and buying new once the well of cheap ass Chinese goods will eventually dry up.
>>105754187>but for most items and most problems i don't believe that is the caseNo. These days, all products are intentionally designed for the trash can. They are designed in such a way, that repairing is so difficult and expensive as possible. Its not the consumers, its the corpos and their unrepairable shit which is the problem.
>>105754232you shouldn't forget that issues aren't always hardware, i've been given computers on more than one occasion for free from friends of friends for reasons that were entirely software. like a laptop that bsod's on boot but was otherwise /completely fine/

>>105753760 (OP)I got 10 years out of my iPod classic because I was able to crack it open and replace the headphone jack every time it broke. Although ultimately, the screen ended up breaking, the battery started to run dry, and I ran out of space on it, so I ended up getting rid of it. It would've been too much of an investment to replace the jack, the battery, the screen, and the hard drive, and I wasn't confident in my ability to fix it all without fucking something up.
>>105754363Why? I enjoy having actually good conversations with anons and wish we'd always get along so well.
>>105754232Most of the talk about electronic repair has context around newish things, that are relatively expensive.
You could spend $2k on a consumer laptop and with warranties being 2 years at the most are you going to tell me its not worth fixing it should something happen after the warranty?
Personally if your spending that much, you should be entitled to a pretty reliable device but unfortunately that's not the case for electronics in general, if anything there is an inverse relationship.
>>105754355>>105754394>to a typical person it's fucked, true but from experience I can say that because even normies have "precious" data on their computers, just throwing it away entirely is usually not desired. They'll often at least take it to a repair place (or ask a techie they know) to see if anything can be done to recover their family photos, homegrown porn, schoolwork, etc.
It's less of a problem on phones since normies tend to upload all their photos to Le Cloud (if not using insta/facebook/whatever to take the photos directly) and nothing productive happens on a phone that isn't stored somewhere else (like e-mail). Contact lists are often stored on the SIM, too, so popping it out (or having the wagie at the phone place do so) keeps that stuff. So they're willing to toss phones over nothing.
But computers, I'd rate as similar to a car in that normies don't have a clue about the issue when something is wrong, but are willing to shell out to have repairs done.
>they have a "windows computer', they /mean it/, Yeah, I remember the days of people thinking "PC" means "Windows box" and saying stuff like "No, I don't have a PC, I have a Mac..."

>>105754417Laptops are an outlier because they're too tightly built and so many things are proprietary that the chance of meaningful repair is slim. Just to replace a CPU you need a fucking wave station or fancy overpriced paste and a temp controlled heat gun and a lot of luck.
>>105753760 (OP)decent amount of them, old stuff can be enjoyable to fix while modern shit is just too annoying to be worth it many of the times.
>>105754407for something like that there's also a obsolescence aspect. like even if a repair doesn't cost much, is that cost better put towards a significant upgrade instead?
some things aren't replaceable like that, like i have a few old consoles around which i have had to repair as well, and while there's back compat in some cases and emulation in most cases, if you want the original experience as-is, you have to repair old hardware. nobody is making those consoles anymore. a music player on the other hand, there's many options, maybe not exactly like your ipod classic, but manageable, alternatives do the core function of playing music just the same, it's more about objective features like size/weight/capacity (which generally improve over time) and interface, which is one part that is very subjective
>>105753760 (OP)When I was a teenager I got my own laptop and naturally put a bunch of porn and games on it, especially modded Skyrim to have a bunch of sex mods. It sounds better, I can slap a 1TB or even 2TB microSD on it and never have to worry about space ever again, and best of all, I don't have to fuck with iTunes. But, one thing that still really bothers me about replacing the iPod is the battery life. Simply put, there's nothing comparable on the market right now. I used to be able to get a week's worth of pretty heavy usage on a single charge. I bought the Walkman because it was supposed to have great battery life, but I get 2, maybe 3 days max out of it. physical controls on the other hand is something that has affected much more than music players. in theory/on paper i get that touch controls offer more flexibility in design, but i do believe that in practice there's many places where they just make things worse. i'm again not a musicfag but i have owned pmp's in the past and even i wouldn't want to buy one that can't be controlled blind from a pocket

I completely destroyed a mechanical keyboard while swapping all the switches. So I drilled holes inside many of those circles, replaced a few switches, and tested the keyboard. Most buttons didn't work, so I disassembled it and looked at the other side of the board.
Turns out the fucking chinks printed those circles for no reason, many had traces running underneath.
Some traces I could fix with solder bridges, but a few were damaged in 2-3 places so I had to bypass them with new wires.

>>105753760 (OP)Yes, but I'm an EE who designed most devices I get to service. Most modern devices are not designed with repair in mind, which sucks so much. I would love to start a company specializing in building house-hold devices that are designed for repair / maintenance in mind to make it easy for people to get replacement parts with minimal fuss so guys can impress their waifus by being Mr. Handyman at home, being able to fix / modify their high quality devices that are a bit overbuild to make them heirloom-level-quality devices that will be passed down from generation to generation so we can minimize the e-trash we heap onto our planet to make it a problem for future generations or third world countries. This "buy-cheap and replace every year"-mentality is utter trash. I want men (and maybe some handy lesbians) to be able to fix their own, basic machines they need at home. Too bad there's no market to support such a company as most people are content with buying cheap shit that they can toss anytime something simple breaks, because, you know, fuck future generation and why buy once for a bit more to get high quality if you can buy some cheap shit once a year.

>>105792576>the average normalfuck can't even sharpen their lawn mower bladesbecause of the cheap shit problem he described, we are becoming less skilled in general as a population
>>105753760 (OP)I swapped out about 50 transistors from a failing TR909 drum machine
all the time, really depends what it is though. Many devices just need a cleaning or a replacement component. I have gaming mice that have been in service for 12 years and only need the occasional switch replacement. Swapping or converting a cable is generally pretty easy and has saved me a bunch of money on headphones over the years. These days with most of my sets i just mod them to have a detachable cable first thing. Keyboards are easy enough, doing capacitor or resistor swaps are simple, replacing dead led's or fixing bad fans is fine. Fixing a phone screen or replacing mobile batteries is also pretty simple.
For all of the above its significantly cheaper and often times faster to just repair something than it is to replace it. Where it starts getting dicey is when you start doing more board level is when that metric starts to get dicey. Diagnostics of more complex issues can be rough and then sourcing components can be brutal - not to mention you pretty much need a hot air station and sometimes a microscope to see whats going on. Whether or not its worth it to go this far on something really depends on the situation and whether you enjoy doing this kind of thing. The people who say shit like "im not poor" are retards as repairing something isn't always about the cost.
Also rossman is an obnoxious faggot
>>105792576I was talking about mostly mechanical parts that often break in house-hold machines that are either stupidly expensive to get from the original manufacturer or are not available at all. I was thinking more about parts like the blades of my mixer or some custom sprockets that break and make the whole machine useless. Open hardware projects would be ideal so even small machine shops (or even individuals with a CNC-mill in their garage) could offer parts of known open hardware products to make some cash on the side, ideally using Monero to not bleed more than we already do. But it's just a dream that's too big to get into reality as it involves too many people and I guess most people don't see the advantage of really owning their own devices.
>designed for repairThe open hardware designs should be designed according to rules like: Don't use glue on parts that have to be disassembled, don't design parts that require specialized equipment, don't use screws with weird driver geometry, use sustainable materials were possible, etc.
I guess I've been pretty fortunate and haven't really had things break on me much. I replaced a cable on an old mouse years ago. Somewhat more recently but still a while back I fixed the right bumper button on my Steam controller. A plastic bit which actuated the button had broken from use over many years, I cut and bent a piece of thin sheet metal in the right shape and I managed to fix it. The bumper button doesn't have the same feel as it used to but it does work reliably.
I have an old portable CD player back from when I was a kid that no longer works (seems to not receive power, neither from batteries nor from an external adapter) that I wanted to have a look at, but I haven't yet.
