The logic, whatever it may be, of stopping short in Helgen is not really the question, rather the logistics of the retinue approaching from the south road, which connects only to the Pale Pass, rather than the east road, which is where it should otherwise be naturally arriving from, if truly on the way from Darkwater Crossing? On a semi-related note, I have no idea what border Ralof is referring to when he claims that they all got caught "trying to cross the border" considering Darkwater Crossing is not named for a border, rather the bridge that crosses the Darkwater River. All the same, the bridge and its small village are nowhere near the borders of Morrowind or Cyrodiil, or the Holds themselves, which never appear to have any official "crossings" so to speak.
It kinda feels like nobody was driving the boat when writing all this shite. Five minutes in and already nothing makes sense.
