But the problem is for an unserious film it's still playing it straight way too often. When it wasn't being absolutely ridiculous and over the top it lapsed into being a more or less normal film like the first three with naturalistic performances and dialogue that doesn't at all acknowledge how goofy or insane everything the preceded it was.
The problem with Batman and Robin isn't that it's campy as fuck but that it's afraid to fully commit to being campy, which is the only way to actually do it. It could have just been funny and lighthearted 100% of the time like the Adam West version and actually been enjoyable but instead it half-asses everything and is an an inconsistent mess pulling in multiple directions.
