Fighting genre is doomed yes. It all comes down to muscle memory and lots of combo memorization.

Since attention spans are shortening, and also there are people who just dont like combo memorization, a natural progression would be a fighting game where people have a ton of moves in the arsenal but no combos. Its more about reaction time and how well you know your kit. But any fighting game that tries this get shunned and called casual.
Only successful one is Smash, which even that is rejected by the “hardcore” fighting fans. And it doesnt need to be like Smash with platforms and stuff, snk heroines is also like this. (Pic related) No combos, its more about knowing your kit, reaction time, and how to blend them together. Also they added items which is fun.
