I think the composition is weighed really heavily toward the tree. Obviously you want the creature approaching through the thick, winter air and obscured, so making IT dark won't work. Maybe try adding some of the red blood TO the creature.
Here's some tweaks I made to it. Trying to remember everything I did ...
I lowered the horizon line, kind of lined everything up to the rule of thirds and brought the guy + tree closer to the beast, added some red to the beast (connecting it to the man's blood leading our eye), and used some spatter as snow flurries to help guide the eye to certain spots.
I'm half asleep so don't think I'm trying to tell you yours sucks and you gotta make all these changes. Just felt like playing around with what you had, that's all.
