What they do before the murder could matter. Some just kill them, others do torture and rape first. Some do the rape after (IIRC Dahmer did that), but that's not as bad because the person is dead anyway.
And there's whether they regret it, a few serial killers feel remorse, most don't give a shit, and some like Gacy seemed to actively enjoy how much his victim's families were torn apart.
