What you mostly need to understand is that they basically suffered a complete apocalypse. Their whole world was destroyed. Their whole knowledge of how life works and how to live totally and completely destroyed.
And this happened RIGHT as alcohol was introduced to most of them
Many naturally turned to drink, and one generation taught alcoholism to the next and so on and so forth and it persists to this day
Even genetic tests have shown that they have no unnatural predisposition to it; its just the result of being from a totally shattered culture
Putting myself in their shoes I think I and my descendants would also all turn to alcohol
