I said this in the "make your own Superman iteration" thread but I personally like the idea of Krypton being destroyed in a great war

City-states and factions divided over religion or politics end up in deadly conflict and it's so devastating that by the end the planet is uninhabitable

It would create even more of an impetus for Clark to be a hero so he can prevent Earth from befalling a similar fate.
