The old decrepit guy, both in the movies and extended canon, is more powerful than Luke and could easily have killed him, had he not been saved by Vader. If you read pic rel for example, both of them do shit in the book that farmboy Luke wouldn't be able to pull off ever. They make hordes of Acklay (the giant insect in the arena in Ep. 2) explode with mere gestures.
Luke will never have a moment as cool as this. What makes him cool is that he's a good person. That's what makes Superman cool too. Modern media likes to shit on this idea by having Luke nearly murder his own flesh and blood, and make constant evil iterations of Superman.
