I think denying the strengths of the atmosphere of the Johto games is really silly, you don't exactly need a youtuber to point it out to you.
The day/night cycle, the way the whole game is about the passage of time and what gets left behind coupled with that soundtrack that has a tinge of melancholy behind nearly every track and you've got a game that I dare say is way better than the sum of its parts just based on how it can make you feel.
To a certain extent every Pokemon game's about using the abstractions of its presentation and mechanics to present you with a believable world, to ellicit a certain feeling in you, and I think Gold and Silver are definitely up there as far as this goal is concerned.
You look at it from afar and it's easy to pick apart the flaws, but when you're in the game you realize it's like an impressionist painting - it's not abot the singular strokes, but how about those strokes come together to make you feel something.
