For years a lot of Wilds apologists have been conflating open world with total lack of structure or guidance and indeed in BotW the game is structured in a way where the only structure is the Great Plateau and the showdown and everything in between is just an extended training arc. That is not what happens in most older Zelda games at all, not even in TLoZ1, and a system like this comes at a cost which is that every component between the beginning and the end is forced to be relatively unimportant to each other. And the story in Tears is written like a largely linear one and it's damaged by being shoehorned into BotW formula.
