What they did to Kael'thas is insane and the thing is his story could've been so good
You could have him as a mirror to Arthas, a prince who was desperate to save his homeland and people at any cost. However have Kael'thas realise that by siding with the Legion and Kil'jaeden that he is just going down the same path as Arthas.

But no, fuck that, just killing him is way more interesting. I hear they made him worse in shadowlands too, making him a prideful dick. It's like the people that did kael in wow never played tft
