Eternal is so weird in retrospect.
>Takes the more grounded focus of 2016 and flips it into a more arcade focused experience. Complete with extra lives.
>Lead Developer blatantly admits he remade the entire game after watching a guys 2016 play-through where he switched weapons a lot and a thought it looked cool.
>Doomguy magically has a floating fortress hubworld in space somehow despite the cliffhanger of the past game trapping him in hell.
>80% of the levels don’t even take place on earth, despite the hook of the game being Doom 2s’ hell on earth to 2016’s Doom 1
>Seriously 50% of the levels take place in fantasy medieval “night sentinel” areas. Like who played D44M and went “oh man these grounded connected industrial and hell areas are so boring let’s make the next game teleporting between Super Mario bowser castles instead.”
>2016 set up Samuel Hayden to be the Vergil to Doomguys Dante. You can’t tell me that the Marauder boss fight wasn’t meant to be Hayden at some point.
>The soundtrack is held together by strings and shoelaces because the developers hated the composer for seemingly no reason.
>Series plot gets hijacked and hyper focuses on the deviantart OC fantasy “300” Spartans ripoff and even has a scene ripped straight from avengers endgame.
>Glosses over the energy crisis that drove the UAC in the last game
>Glosses over the hell invasion of earth.
>The usual defense of all this nonsense is that “it’s Doom bro it was never taken seriously” is completely shattered when they made a game after Eternal that takes itself super duper seriously.
Eternal gets a lot of shitflinging for its gameplay but the entire game feels like some bizarre anomaly years afterwards. I’m surprised Bethesda didn’t protest a lot of the 180 design decisions of Eternal.
