I've always used the rightmost layout but that means I only get access to 1 fast inserter which isn't enough before inserter capacity.
The leftmost layout with the gap in the middle however works by default.
It's one of those odd things I never noticed before they added visible crafting speeds to assemblers and I installed the inserter throughput mod to see just how fast the arms swing.
