Because "deserving" implies we would have a way of 'earning' salvation to begin with, which we don't, because we can't.
Let me put it like this. If you were to be convicted for murder (maybe by accident, or it was some kind of crime of passion), and you know you would be getting the death penalty for it, you can't plead defense in your case by pointing out to some other good things you did in life like donating to charity or being nice and kind to others. You still committed a serious crime that required the judge to justly deal with. This is basically how sin works. Every aspect of it is repugnant in the face of God, who is All Good, and when you engage in it, you basically turn into a criminal caked in filth who deserves to be justly dealt with.
But because God loves humanity so much, he gave up his only Son, to die on the cross, in order to allow for a way so that people actually get themselves out of an issue like that which previously seemed unescapable.
What happens here is that if you have faith in Jesus Christ, believe that he died on the Cross then rose again on the Third Day in order to pay for your sins, you can ask Him to help you legally get out of an issue like that, where you would normally be deserving of Death.
It would be like this basically: As before, you are sentenced to death for murder. You don't get bail, you don't get prison time, just straight up death, and there's nothing you could personally do get yourself out of it through your own works or good deeds. But, in your relationship with Christ, you can actually call up on Him who knows The Father, who will be your Judge, and ask Him to interceed on your behalf and he will basically tell The Father all about you, he knows who you truly are past your lapses in judgement that led you down to do said crime, and will simply then just tell Him "Father, I forgive them."
The debt of Death has already been paid by Christ's Sacrifice, so the verdict for you then would not be guilty.
