You can technically activate the DLC during a normal run since it acts like a mod. Some recipes might get changed and technologies get shuffled around but it will still work. 90% of the early game is the same besides rockets. They come in at blue science and are far cheaper since you need to launch hundreds of them. Most the other techs are the same besides a few getting moved to other planets or to space.
