Laserbeak had to box the warhound in so the knights could get into melee. The magerna would rip its reactor right out its ass but would cause a critical meltdown which killed a knight and damaged laserbeak further. Worse though Laserbeak was way outta position and exposed, but if it had advanced properly the warhound would have just come up behind it and melted it without contest.
