They weren't just hidden. They are animated by shadow instead of the grace of gold, similar to the Scadutree robbed of gold. Messmer and Melina have shadow and not grace that being apparent from their eyes.
Ironeye in Nightreign has the same murky spectral eye as Melina and he lives in Death while Messmer has abyssal eyes and both cover them.
