Here. You want to set your textures max size to as low resolution as possible while still looking acceptable from a couple feet away. Sometimes 512 or 1024 at high quality will look better than 2048 at normal quality. Never use low quality or crunch compression for any reason.
If the avatar in question uses more than 40MB of texture memory, you're doing it wrong. Unless it's built for orange board activities.
