It's fantastic. And completely derivative. The best, genuinely competent Dark Souls clone. If you consider Dark Souls one of the best games of all times, for reasons that have more to do with overall game design than simply the combat system, and just want more of it, then this is the best all-around clone on the market. It does things that other clones, and even from themselves, have forgotten or abandoned, and it does them really well.
The combat system is really good, very solid with a few cool new little ideas and mechanics here and there. But there are other clones with combat and bosses just as solid or more fleshed out. That's not the main draw.
The real star is the level and game design. Levels are sprawling, maze-like, fulls of branching, winding, narrow paths, twists and turns, nooks and crannies, interconnected shortcuts and runbacks, verticality. Full of tension, falls, traps, hazards, ambushes and tricks. You have to engage with game mechanics and use the tools in your arsenal. You have to pay attention to your surroundings. You have to be patient and methodical. It's about overcoming obstacles and problem-solving.
And this is where things get confusing, because there's this shift in the fan base. Despite loud consensus claiming DS1 remains an all-time best/favorite game, in reality, consider:
Demon's Souls: 1M copies
Dark Souls: 2M copies
Elden Ring: 30M copies
Loudest voices in soulslike convo now only played ER, and have NOT touched DS1 or DeS. But if you're an og DeS/DS1 fan, you know what's been subverted (see Matosis).
When you see reactions to Wuchang, it all makes perfect sense. Negative complaints don't meaningfully critique the game design or address what it's trying to be. Low IQ shitters are simply complaining the game is confusing or punishing. Most of them not paying basic attention to anything and blaming the game for it. This is not critique, this is just them failing at IQ tests.
ER was cancer. Wuchang is chemo.
