Outer dimensional entities being misidentified as angels and demons, but they are just fighting each other and humanity is in the middle. Of course, this being very hidden and implicit with no way of the outside world to truly identiify them, except the few survivors caught in between this conflict. In the middle of the movie the protagonist realizes that humanity doesn't have a chance of enacting free will while these entities battle each other and this is done very offhandedly, to show how insignificant we are.
