Actually, this did work, however the machine in question had an old tantalum capacitor, and those have the hilarious failure mode of growing crystals that eventually turn the capacitor into a short, and they fail spectacularly.
The mistake the 8bit dude did was not to check if the machine was shorted.
It did survived the affair.
