The game was definitely not built to accommodate that kind of control scheme. There is literally nothing wrong with the default layout and it complements the gameplay perfectly-- it's insane to me that people have so much fucking trouble with it.

I definitely don't agree. The *only* arguably mediocre thing about it is the repetitive dungeon design. Even then, the sound direction is so good that it manages to make what is essentially just a bunch of corridors seem like a genuinely dangerous place.
