The story I've heard on the Yugioh change is largely because, yes, they were compelled to airbrush the Japanese cards regardless and it's easier to just make one unified "any language dub" text (the Rush Duel anime have been maintaining the practice of editing the cards even though there's literally no product sold in the West) but I've also heard that the legal aspect was something that they might have gotten more scrutiny over since they were actually playing with the same physical objects, the series is about a card game instead of it being like a superhero series that happens to have a toy tie-in.
It isn't exactly disallowed to have it be explicitly a commercial but it does add some red tape and extra costs so anything to reduce the direct comparison to the game is "more useful than not."
