Was about a decade overdue for an upgrade. My "fallback" machine listed above is what I was using prior.
Short version of the story: Saved-up several years worth of spendable cash to build dream PC, centered around Intel's 13th gen series. Issues of said series weren't widely known at the time. i9-13900K does what it is now known to do, and dies about a year later.
Salvaged most of the parts from that machine to use in an AMD-focused build, as I'm utterly disillusioned with Intel after their 13th/14th gen debacles. Now it seems like I can't escape this curse.

Need to build around an EATX form factor due to the horrifyingly obscene size my 4090 takes up, and the only two other options besides an ASRock Taichi at the time I built my most-recent tower were the MSI MEG X870E Godlike, and the Gigabyte X870E Aorus Xtreme AI (bloody hell these names...), both of which were getting trashed in reviews despite being twice as expensive.
Wouldn't have gone for ASRock were the competition at the time not seemingly even worse (somehow).
/Supposedly/ the somewhat recently released Asus ROG Crosshair X870E Extreme (...) might be okay, but who even know how current-day tech will play out until at least half a year has passed for any crippling bugs to show through.
