Counterpoint: Retarded power fantasies are great. Most male media and hobbies involve a retard strength power fantasy. If the Bethesda games were called Apocalypse Road (the name they were going to go with instead of Fallout if they lost the IP rights auction) these arguments would all be a lot different.
People absolutely rip apart the bethesda fallout games for their straightforward simple design but also are fans of dumb power fantasy games like DOOM, Rage, Warhammer, Ultrakill... etcetera.
People are not mad at the Bethesda Fallout games for being shooters with simple action-rpg mechanics and meh writing. They're mad at the presumption they are living up to the Fallout Legacy. It's the Brand Disrespect. That is the main reason behind all this. If this was an original IP (and maybe also a different company with less baggage as a formerly-RPG developer) people would be singing their praises, if not for the writing, then just for the world design. The gaming world who never heard of Fallout before all loved Fallout 3 for a reason. And that same gaming world turned on this new vision of fallout once FNV showed them what could have been, and what they were missing out on. The games being action shooters are not the original sin.
