I was under the impression that aos' launch was pretty rocky (though maybe not AS bad as you would expect from the internet's reaction at the time), but the game started being pretty succesful after the release of the first general's handbook in early 2016 and climbing steadily after that into 2017. Then 40k's 8th edition with primaris launched in june (?) of 2017, and we all know how that turned out.
