Being better mechanically doesn't mean much when it does a far worse job with the amount of variety in relation to just how much combat there is compared to the original. The plank is awful in the original which makes getting the much improved steel pipe after the apartments feel a lot better whereas the remake couldn't be bothered to make a different set of animations or a second set of attacks for the measly 3 melee weapons it provides you with so the steel pipe is effectively just a buffed version of the plank and doesn't even have a longer reach either so it outright just replaces the plank literally you don't even get to keep it after getting the pipe.
