World building is very hard. Both making a setting interesting to interact and showing players how to have fun with it. Vampire did this pretty well, have each class be a clique and include how they feel about the other ones, now the player has a role play shorthand and has been informed that there are built in mechanics to be pretend toxic to each other.

5e was expected to be a universal system even though the team was well aware that universal systems always underperform. So they didn't say anything but made FR the tacit setting, truting at some point they'd be allowed to develop FR and complete the pack behind WotC's back. They didn't or couldn't or failed at it, it doesn't matter. The end result is a fighting game aproach. Most players have no clue about cultures, countries, lore, or any role play aid that would make them pick anything, but that dude is blue and that one is an orange dragon dude and I prefer green so I'm checking the dude lady's move set hoping to make her my main. That's it. "Freakshit" is popular because people have something to make an opinion about. Notice how the people complaining about freakshit never really expand on humans, they have no reasson to play one outside of not being a weirdo, it's the exact same fighting game or beat'em up logic.
