HOLY SHIT this makes so much sense. It all makes sense now. So this is why some people only buy certain games if they are popular and walk past them otherwise. On the one hand it's the social proof and not wanting to waste time with something that is disliked by the in-group. On the other hand it's because some people only play games (even pure single player games) as a social activity. They do it so that they can talk with other people about the game or experience the online community or watch videos on it etc. If a game has none of that they skip it even if it's the greatest game ever made, because their priorities are completely social and have nothing to do with the pure gameplay experience in the first place. There are people who play games because it drowns out their mental problems. There's people who play games because they enjoy the process. And then there's people who play games to participate in the social element. How did I not realize it until now
