Their only real use was simply having an official place to host user generated content or official servers for people, but in both of these cases it's still entirely possible to simply share the user generated files manually IF they're not made to be encrypted somehow as a means to force people to use the central servers as not the best sharing platform but the only sharing platform. And likewise it's entirely possible to self host servers given the tools.
