the great society was a reaction to society falling apart and progressivism largely failing for the last 80 years to usher in any real change. Once again the establishment promised the world to disaffected immigrants whose only purpose of existence was to work and get taxed by the government. The great society was supposed to level the playing field but actually what it did was raise taxes higher than ever before including a 90% income tax for the highest earners. This actually ended up having the reverse effect and prevented the economy from recovering after the great depression as fast as it should have.
