I think sports car racing as a product just has a natural appeal to the wider audience, especially because of recognisable brands and the exoticness of it being such a niche sport
It's just that they've not really known how to market it for the longest time and there's been a big influx of new fans when they started streaming races free on Youtube coupled with games like ACC, LMU and GT bringing modern sports cars and sports car racing into the general consciousness of younger people these days
