>When people complain about the game "calling them bad people" I just see it as them not liking that feeling
Something I've noticed is those types of people really don't like when games are actually trying to tell a serious story with a fucked up protagonist. Games like Lisa, Hotline Miami and Spec Ops aren't solely just about calling YOU a bad person for "playing the game", they're introspective stories about a fucked up protagonist and what drives them to do fucked up things. Something which movies, books, tv shows and the like have done for decades.
But it's suddenly a personal attack when the same kind of storytelling is in a video game because they think the in-universe characters calling the protagonist bad equates to calling the player bad.
This type of mentality is exactly why gamers who say "video games are art" don't get taken seriously, because they simultaneously don't want to play games that make them feel bad or make them question their own morality.
Unlike the other mentioned games, Deltarune specifically strips away the protagonist abstraction and makes (you) diagetic to the plot, making the player it's own character separate from Kris. But you can still just think of it as roleplaying a terrible manipulative being and y'know, appreciate the fact that you can do genuinely terrible things that the story treats as actually bad and fucked up. Getting mad that the game doesn't validate your every choices means you don't care to actually play an RPG, just play those cozy simulator validationslop games or something.
