A lot of characters are lacking the juxtaposition that made them interesting. Even Sakura was a badass. The short length and lack of consequence from nowadays' H-scenes also leave them with no narrative grit. I think back to TA3 and how the soldiers were raping Murasaki and Sakura to find out the location of their students, and how, no matter what they did, Mu-chan and Sakura held in there and lost their lives as punishment. There used to be a purpose to the porn and stuff to be explored from it, but now everything's so disjointed and shallow.
