Just tried my first Kilchoman. Went with the Machir Bay in order to compare it with Laphroaig 10 and Ardbeg 10. Wow. That's fucking nice. It has a more straightforward campfire smokiness like Ardbeg rather than a vegetal smokiness like Laphroaig, and it has a really fucking silky mouthfeel which is excessively pleasant.
Despite this being quite heavily peated, I think this would make a fantastic introduction to peated whiskies. It doesn't have any weird/off flavors at all to it - just campfire smoke, citrus and vanilla. Comparatively, Ardbeg can have a tarry note which can be offputting to some and Laphroaig has vegetal/medicinal qualities which can be offputting to some. This just straight up tastes traditionally good as long as you like smoke.
Personally, I'd say Machir Bay = Ardbeg 10 > Laphroaig 10 (and I love me some 'frog)
Looks like my next order will include the Sanaig so I can compare it to Lagavulin 16 and Ardbeg Uigeadail.
