how commonplace was dyed clothing in medieval times among the commoners?
a quick online search says that even peasants wore a mix of dyed and undyed clothing, since weld, woad, madder meant access to yellow, blue, and red even among the lower classes
but none of them are really authoritative sources nor do they mention any
some people are telling me that people in medieval times were too poor to afford dyed clothes and too overworked to be able to dye it themselves, since all their waking hours would be devoted to farming and housework
and so wore primarily undyed clothing
dyers existing primarily to serve the upper class and not the peasants, on that matter
any good reading on these kinds of things?

most artistic depictions of peasants do use blue, red, yellow, and brown, which tracks with the most readily available dyes
But green shows up a lot too
maybe they were really good at mixing colors?
